Continue on through the scenic Karangahake Gorge, passing the remains of historic gold-mining sites and the 1896 Victoria Battery on the banks of the Ohinemuri River. Pass through the historic gold-mining town of Waihi to Waihi Beach and the picturesque mural town of Katikati via the coast road. On to Tauranga, passing through the suburb of Bethlehem, and the beach resort of Mount Maunganui. After stopping to admire the stunning beach, head up over the impressive Kaimai Ranges with time to admire the panoramic views over the Matamata plains below. Continue to Hobbiton (where lunch is provided) set on lush private farmland near Matamata. After lunch, tour the 10-acre site of the village movie set with a guide. Explore the remains of the hobbits’ dwellings, and enjoy the spectacular views across to the Kaimai Ranges from this private working sheep and beef farm. Return to Auckland late afternoon.
